Down to Earth

Earth and Space

Still focusing on our big unit theme of “Our Planet Earth”, all grades are studying processes that shape the Earth. Kindergarten and 1st graders have been classifying and describing the rocks and the slow changes they go through in the rock cycle. They have learned to describe using SCUMPS (size, color, use, material, parts, and shape) and made bracelets illustrating the features of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Second and third graders have collided with Earth and learned about the formation of craters – and the important science skill of repeating your experiment to prove a point (or “bust a myth”). Fourth and fifth graders are investigating mass and how it relates to weathering of rocks – important for its application to weathering of building materials.

We have some new residents in the science lab that will teach us all the circle of life and the food chain from the bottom up – welcome to our decomposers – the Red Wiggler worms. More about that later.

Please visit again soon. Have a look at the sites on the “Blog Roll” on the right side of this page for fun games, interesting websites, and help with fourth grade science fair projects!
