2007-08 Club NEWS Archive:

Congratulations to Valeria, Jimin, and Jack for their ExploraVision project. Their idea was for a ring and watch that reacted to the ultraviolet light from the sun and had features to remind you to apply sunscreen. They completed the writing in time for the January deadline. Have a look at the ExploraVision website and see previous winning ideas.

Thank you to all the parents and students that joined us in a very successful EARTH DAY GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP. Thank you also to Ms. Kasher-Hill and her team from Broward County Adopt-a-Street for their great presentation and superb prizes. They provided notebooks and pencils made from recycled materials for all students (great for recording all your science observations!) and reusable grocery bags for all parents (and they sent more for all the teachers too).

Thank you to all that participated in and voted on the Design a Greener Future recycling bin contest. We had enough votes to be in the TOP 10. Visit our opossum at Young at Art Children’s Museum along with the other top 10 winners.

Thank you to all that participated in the tile decorating contest for the CERP: Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan — Army Corps of Engineers Earth Day contest. They were displayed briefly at the movie theater at Riverwalk.

Thank you to our guest at our Feb. 26 meeting – Mr. Jim Lushine, Severe Weather Meteorologist from NBC6. Unfortunately, there was an unusual power failure and tornado watch issued right at 2:00, so Mr. Paul Deanno, Chief Meteorologist from NBC6 with the station’s “Hurricane Hummer” had to go on the air and didn’t make it. He will reschedule later this school year.

National Chemistry Week (October 21 – 27, 2007): In celebration of National Chemistry Week (NCW 2007) the Eagle Point Science Club participated in a poster contest sponsored by the South Florida American Chemical Society (SoFLACS). We were able to submit four posters from 4th graders and four from 5th graders. We wish the best of luck to the following students as they compete in the regional level: Good Luck to 4th graders Stephanie A., Cameron G., Mariana M., and Daniella S. and 5th graders Daniel D., Jimin K., Francesco L., and Jack L. Congratulations to Stephanie and Jack – they both won the 1st place ribbons from the South Florida section of the American Chemical Society for their posters. Thank you to all the Science Club members who submitted their posters. They were all fantastic!

At our Oct. 9th meeting we had a visitor from the Sun-Sentinel to talk to the students about the school being named a Blue Ribbon School. Most of what we had to say was cut from the video, but have a look at what we were working on – Read the article and watch the video here.

Science club will meet after school (2:05-3:00 PM) two Tuesdays per month on the following dates: Sept. 25, Oct. 9, Oct. 23, Nov. 6, Nov. 20, Dec. 4, Dec. 18, Jan. 15, Jan. 29, Feb. 12, Feb. 26, Mar. 11, Mar. 25, Apr. 15, Apr. 22 (Earth Day), May 6, and May 20.If you have ideas of what you would like to do in science club enter a comment on this page (scroll down)….

Have you started your research? How about this for a start – think about living in a station without gravity for years (the time it will take to go to Mars and back to the moon) at a time. What kinds of problems will this cause? What can we do about it?
